Davao (CNN Philippines) — Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ricardo Marquez denied the allegation that the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) main compound in Tandang Sora, Quezon City has about 100 cops acting as security personnel for church officials.

In a talk with the media during his visit in Davao City on Thursday (October 29) Marquez said there is no truth to the allegation that the INC is keeping a private army by maintaining about 100 PNP personnel who are also members of their congregation.

Marquez said there is no PNP command post inside the INC compound in Quezon City. He admitted though that there are cops assigned to do roving patrol outside the vicinity of the INC compound.

A military officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that the INC’s use of men from the PNP, who are also their members, started since the days of former president Ferdinand Marcos.

The Philippine Constabulary (PC) back then approved the group’s request for a command post. Since then, the number of uniformed personnel deployed on rotation basis inside the INC compound increased to around 100 through the years, the military officer said.
