Forget ‘occupy EDSA': INC planning ‘bigger’ rally

If you thought the Iglesia Ni Cristo’s (INC) “occupy EDSA” stunt last August was annoying, wait till you hear about what the obedient members of the sect have in store for motorists.

Expelled INC minister Lowell Menorca Jr. revealed in a press conference Sunday, October 25 that the Christian sect was planning an even “bigger” demonstration as a response to the legal action directed at its Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo.

“Expect the worst this time,” Menorca said rather forebodingly.

On Friday, the Supreme Court (SC) named as respondents Manalo and other top INC officials Radel Cortez, Bienvenido Santiago and Rolando Esguerra in writs of amparo and habeas corpus before the Court of Appeals (CA).

That writs have to do with the alleged illegal detention of Menorca, who claims to have been “incarcerated” upon orders of the INC’s Council of Elders or “Sanggunian”. The former minister said he and his family were only released a few days ago after a harrowing three months in captivity.

The SC order is for Manalo and the other INC bigwigs to appear before the CA hearing on November 3.

“We are not against Ka Eduardo. Darami talaga magagalit sa amin. Ang isyu dito ay yung sa mga ginawa namin,” Menorca said.

The century-old religious group hates being meddled upon in its internal affairs by unenlightened “outsiders”, which is the reason why the traffic-snarling EDSA demonstration occurred in the first place.

And if Menorca is to be believed, the INC is poised to throw its tantrums once again in the name of God and salvation. (Randy K. Ortega)
